If you love music — and, specifically, if you love the idea of passing on your love of music to students - we offer the Master of Arts in Education with a specialization in music education focusing on either instrumental or vocal/choral. The alternative master's program (AMP) is designed for those who have a bachelor’s degree in music but who have not received teaching certification and/or have not completed the requirements for student teaching at the undergraduate level.

Admissions Requirements

Instrumental: To be considered for admission to the instrumental music program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements and attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the choral music AMP must have an undergraduate major in music AND specific content courses & music competencies, pass a juried audition at the graduate student level rated by UAB Music faculty, and pass a music placement exam. Alternative Master's Program

The Alternative Masters Program (AMP) is designed for individuals who hold an undergraduate degree in a field outside of education who want to become certified teachers. Students who successfully complete the AMP will earn a master’s degree in education and be eligible for Class A certification in their specific teaching field.
